3. Planning and Design

Demand responsive approaches to water supply development aim to match user demand with an appropriate response from providers.

Designing an appropriate response depends on understanding the importance of water in relation to the livelihood activities of different users.

This section highlights a number of challenges faced by planners and designers of pro-poor community-based water supply and sanitation interventions.

The process of planning and design can be divided into three stages. To find out more click on the links below:

  1. Investigation: understanding demand for water, and demand for an improved water service, at a community level
  2. Feasibility: assessing technical, social and financial aspects of different technology and service options
  3. Final Design: matching demand with an appropriate set of technology and service options at community level
